ACTION ALERT: Protect WIC – A Lifeline For Families at Risk

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is one of our nation’s most effective tools for combating hunger and improving maternal and child health. Yet right now, its future is at risk.

The Senate has passed a bipartisan Agriculture Appropriations bill that would fully fund WIC at $8.2 billion, a $500 million increase from last year.

This funding ensures WIC can meet rising participation and protect the Cash Value Benefit (CVB)—a monthly stipend that allows families to buy fruits and vegetables.

But unless the House agrees to this funding level, millions of families could face reduced benefits or be turned away altogether.

Why WIC Matters

WIC provides nutritious foods, breastfeeding support, nutrition education, and health care referrals to low-income pregnant and postpartum individuals, infants, and children under 5. It serves nearly 40% of all infants born in the U.S. and participation is linked to:

  • Healthier births and lower infant mortality
  • Improved nutrition and access to preventive care
  • Higher academic achievement later in life

Despite its proven impact, only about half of eligible individuals are enrolled. That means millions of families are missing out on critical support—especially in communities of color and rural areas where food insecurity is highest.

What’s at Stake

The CVB, which allows families to purchase fresh, frozen, canned, or dried produce, was expanded in 2024 to $26/month for children, $47/month for postpartum individuals, and $52/month for breastfeeding individuals. These benefits are essential for ensuring access to the nutrients children need to grow and thrive.

If Congress fails to adopt the Senate’s funding level, these benefits could be slashed—reducing fruit and vegetable access by up to 10%.
