Visiting Living Well Kent: A Sun-drenched Day on a Sumner Farm

Earlier this month, Northwest Harvest’s Advancement Team spent a sun-drenched day at Living Well Kent’s newly acquired 8-acre farm in Sumner. The team had a blast saying hello to the resident goats, pulling weeds, and preparing plots for planting. We also chatted with Food Access Manager Ahmed about LWK’s food justice work!

Living Well Kent seeks to grow nourishing and culturally celebrated foods that support the physical and emotional wellbeing of people living in South King and Pierce County. They also operate a 4-acre farm in Kent, worked by community members, many of whom are immigrants and refugees! These folks are growing knowledge, skills, AND vegetables! 

Food is also grown in a 2,000 sq ft greenhouse in Auburn. Produce from all three sites is distributed through LWK’s Food Hub and other community partners, including schools and food banks. Over 132,000 lbs of produce was distributed in 2023 alone! Living Well Kent even began managing the Kent Farmers Market in 2025 (go say ‘hey’ to them on Saturdays through September)!

Though his original career path involved dentistry, Ahmed has developed a meaningful relationship to working with the land. It’s difficult labor – long hours, exposure to the elements, and limited staff pull it all off – but it is also work that fuels and powers his community.
