US House Says Yes to Build Back Better

Northwest Harvest applauds the US House of Representatives for passing the Build Back Better Act earlier this morning!

The package is designed to fund essential needs and services to ensure that our economic recovery is collectively a stronger recovery because of equitable investments in essential needs and services. Critical investments in child care, paid family leave, health care, and housing will help stabilize economic crises so that adults can be healthy for work and children can focus on learning at school.

The Build Back Better Act has the potential to provide more consistent, year-round access to nutritious meals thanks to provisions that would do the following:

  • Expand the number of schools that provide nutritious breakfasts and lunches at no cost to students using improvements to the Community Eligibility Provision.
  • Grocery assistance for families that have students who are eligible for free and reduced price meals to make sure that meals aren’t missed during the summer months when schools are closed.
  • Funding for school kitchen equipment grants and school programs that help students learn healthy eating habits.
  • An extension of the Child Tax Credit which has been significantly reducing child hunger and poverty because families are spending their credit on food and other essentials.

But our work is not done yet. The Senate still has to vote on the Build Back Better Act and that means we must keep up the volume in urging the Senate to vote and pass this bill now.
