Growing Food Justice Across Washington
Get Involved|Advocacy|Our Legislative Priorities
Northwest Harvest believes that ending hunger means fighting its root cause—poverty. To this end, we advocate for public policies that 1) promote access to nutritious food, 2) help those who struggle to meet their basic needs, and 3) support budgets that restore our basic safety net with fair and sustainable revenue.
Northwest Harvest advocates for state and federal policies to increase access to food, housing, health care, and economic stability.

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated food insecurity across our state, and Washington’s response by statewide agencies was swift. But the state’s gap analysis must and can be more effective with local action. Local hunger tasks forces include trusted messengers for diverse populations and can analyze and inform the state’s analysis with a community-driven, equity focused lens; local hunger task forces can use this information to inform their existing work closing gaps quickly and effectively.
Northwest Harvest supports the 2020 Census. It’s mandated by the U.S. Constitution, and we have counted our national population every 10 years since 1790. But beyond that, census results help determine two critical factors: the amount of federal funding for public programs each state is awarded and the number of Congressional seats they are allotted. We advocate for a complete count in Washington state every census year.
SNAP is a first line of defense against hunger. By helping people buy the food they need, SNAP fuels local economies and is a safety net to help people through tough times. Budget cuts to SNAP hurt our communities and threaten to increase hunger, poverty, and poor health for all of us.
