Fall: More Than Pretty Foliage

by Catherine McAuliffe

Fall truly is upon us. I posted some pictures on Facebook today of the fall colors from across the state and I started thinking about what fall means and how we experience it. I first thought of the cozy sweaters, hot chocolate and sitting by the fire. All of those images are pretty comfortable thoughts. As I walked outside our building and saw our clients walking towards our Cherry Street Food Bank I thought about what fall and imminent approach of winter means for people who are just barely getting by.

While I may think of warm sweaters many other people may be asking how they are going to afford coats for their children this year. I think of hot chocolate and others are wondering if they are going to need to spend less on food in order to make ends meet. I think of sitting by a nice warm fire and others wonder how they are going to heat their homes and keep their families warm this winter.

As always we try to alleviate as many worries for families as we possibly can by providing as much nutritious food to our partner programs and clients. In order to this we rely heavily on people like you and we have some incredible ways to help support out mission and those of our partners.

  • Hunger Stops Here Challenge: Through November 20th, your donation can be matched. Our goal is $500,000 and we are getting close!
  • Virtual Food Drive: Sign up to host a food drive entirely online. You can challenge other groups and see who can reach the goal first.
  • Seahawks Tackle Hunger: Get pumped up with fans of the 12th man before the Seahawks game on November 3rd against Tampa Bay. We’ll be collecting donations before the game .
  • Buy a Bottle: Donate a Meal: During November and December for every bottle of Stoli, Svedka, Sailor Jerry, Bacardi, Jack Daniel’s, Evan Williams, Dewar’s, El Jimador, Glennfiddich, Christian Brothers, and Black Velvet sold in Washington State $0.23 will be donated to Northwest Harvest.

The next couple of months are some of the busiest for us. We hope that you’ll join us in fighting hunger across the state!
