What You Can Do

Advocacy to end childhood hunger doesn’t close for the summer either. Here are three things you can do to advocate for hungry kids:

  1. Contact your U.S. Representative and ask them to protect and strengthen nutrition programs in the federal budget appropriations process. Ask them to oppose additional cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly “food stamps”), support increases to The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) that helps emergency food providers in our communities, and to oppose rollbacks to school meal standards. You can tell them that there is little to no evidence that compliance with school meal standards creates a burden for Washington schools as evidenced by the fact that according to the USDA, 97% of Washington’s schools are in compliance with the healthier standards.
  2. Sign on to this petition from Food Lifeline, showing your organization’s support of Sen. Murray’s STOP Child Summer Hunger Act.
  3. Get the word out about free summer meal sites in your area. Facebook, tweet, and share flyers to help families in need find the resources that will connect them to a summer meals site near them. Find resources for sharing and promoting summer meals sites in this toolkit from WithinReach.
  4. Invite your Congressional representatives to visit your summer meals site to help educate them about child nutrition issues. If you can host a Congressional visit at your summer meal site, contact our Public Policy Manager, Christina Wong.
