Northwest Harvest is a 40 year-old, statewide, nonprofit hunger relief organization, headquartered in Seattle with food distribution operations in Kent, Spokane and Yakima and a fiscal year-end of June 30. Some travel to distribution centers is expected periodically. The Senior Accountant is responsible for applying accounting policies and control procedures to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of financial data; for inventory and revenue accounting; ensuring timely month/quarter/year-end closes; posting transactions; analysis and reconciling accounts; state and local tax reporting (B&O, Fuel Tax, L&I, etc.) and full-charge bookkeeping for Northwest Harvest’s non-operating subsidiary.
These functions will be done in a manner that ensures compliance with GAAP, Industry and FASB standards, along with other regulatory agency requirements. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Revenue (Donations) and Cash Receipts:
- Posting cash receipts and other gifts (donated food, gift cards, etc.)
- Reconciling Revenue database records to Accounting system records
- Identifying, maintaining and reconciling permanently and temporarily restricted funds received and spent
- Making bank deposits as needed.
Inventory Accounting:
- Posts inventory transactions coordinating with distribution center operations
- Ensures inventory quantities are costed appropriately
- Ensures inventory activity, receipts & distributions, are properly recorded
- Generates inventory analysis reports
- Reconciles Inventory monthly
- Attends periodic inventory counts as necessary
Monthly Functions:
- Calculate and posts adjustments for balance sheet accounts (amortization, depreciation)
- Reconciles cash and investment accounts
- Reconciles balance sheet accounts (Accounts payable, prepaids, inventory, etc.)
- Prepares recurring month-end journal entries.
- Researches and analyzes account discrepancies and expenses by department
- Maintains fixed assets and records monthly depreciation through Fixed Asset System (FAS)
Quarterly and Annual Functions:
- Prepares regulatory tax returns (International Fuel Tax Agreement Return, B&O taxes)
- Form 1099 preparation and distribution
- Prepare schedules in conjunction with annual audit and Form 990 tax return
- Filing of IRS Form 2290 – Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax
Other Duties & Responsibilities:
- Maintain financial accounting database
- Assist with special department projects
- Provide Agency-wide training to employees
- Provide back-up support to the Director of Finance and Accountant as necessary
- Assist with the day-to-day operations of the Accounting department
- Provide guidance to other departments with regard to accounting policy and procedures
A well-qualified candidate for this position will possess the following:
Experience & Education:
- 4 to 6 years related experience or full-charge bookkeeping with a successful track record showing increased responsibilities
- Accounting undergraduate degree from a 4 year accredited program
- Understanding of accepted accounting and auditing practices and principles
- Understanding of applicable business laws, codes and regulations
- Deep experience with integrated accounting software packages and Microsoft business software applications (Excel, Word)
- Prior experience with Navision (Dynamics) and/or Ceres and nonprofit accounting is highly desired

The Special Events and Corporate Relations Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing special events for the agency and managing corporate relations as they pertain to events under the supervision of the Director of Community Affairs.
Special Events
Northwest Harvest holds upwards of 15 media-sponsored events throughout the year in the Seattle metropolitan area that contribute well over a half million dollars of donated promotional services, over $250,000 and close to a half million pounds of food to the agency annually. The agency has developed long-standing partnerships with local businesses and major media outlets that support these community events.
The manager is responsible for managing all details of these events while cultivating relationships with event partners and helping to identify and develop new events and partnerships.
The duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Cultivates event partnerships.
- Takes a leadership role in the development of the event to advocate for the agency and its needs.
- Communicates regularly with all event partners before, during, and after events.
- Ensures projects are on schedule and within budget.
- Ensures timely coordination with volunteer manager, warehouse and other agency staff.
- Coordinates with the Volunteer Manager to recruit event volunteers as needed.
- Orients and supervises large volunteer groups and staff assisting at events.
- Maintains event reporting database and reports event results in a timely manner to the Director of Community Affairs and event partners.
- Evaluates the event’s effectiveness and reviews results with the Director of Community Affairs.
- Keeps entire agency informed of upcoming special events and post-event results.
- Helps identify potential new events and partnerships.
- Coordinates with the Donor Relations Manager with regard to seeking new corporate partnerships.

- Proficicent in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Publisher and Power Point.
- Ability to work weekends and evenings as required.
Non-profit experience is a plus. Event management experience is mandatory. Candidate must be willing to perform physical labor such as lifting, carrying and setting up event boxes and other materials with little outside assistance. Candidate must have own vehicle and valid Washington State Driver’s License.
