About Our Advocacy
We are a direct service agency whose mission is to fight to eliminate hunger, but we are well aware that fighting hunger requires more than feeding the hungry. We know that eliminating hunger requires addressing its root causes.
Advocacy on behalf of low-income people has always been part of Northwest Harvest’s work, and in 2009 we hired our first public policy manager to boost advocacy efforts. We are also an active, long-standing member of the Washington Food Coalition, the Anti-Hunger & Nutrition Coalition and the Western Regional Anti-Hunger Coalition, among other advocacy groups.
Northwest Harvest engages in advocacy to promote investment in the public structures that aid in our fight to eliminate hunger by promoting both access to nutritious food and basic economic security for low-income families. Our leadership provides input to state and national legislators on hunger issues. We work to raise public consciousness about the extent of hunger in Washington through our quarterly newsletter, our broad volunteer work, speaking engagements and our frequent food drives and other events.
